The 'Christ the Savior' temple. This place was just build over the last 5
years, and was just opened to the public last summer. It is a duplicate
of the original temple that was destroyed during the Russian Revolution.
Stalin had plans to put a sky scraper over the top of the former temple,
and had the ground dug out (which was lower the the bottom of the Moscow
river if i understand correct). But with WW2 happening, metal was
needed for other purposes then sky scrapers, so the project was put off.
For years there was an open air, all year swimming pool on the site.
Considering the state of the country and the amount spend on the temple
(which i'm forgetting), i actually find it a really sad monument to the
evilness of religion that extracts from its people exorbitant sums of
money for their salvation.
For instance, if the money spent to build this were to be used for country
improvement, every public and private toilet in Russia could have toilet
paper for the next century. While a temple looks real nice, i don't see
who would complain about having the toilet paper. Paper is much softer
then marble anyway.
I guess it just depends on how you prefer to clean up a country.
